Transparency:
Transparency is something that is continuous goal within the Junior State, and I fundamentally believe that transparency is the most vital component to an effective senate. Currently, there is an evident lack of communication between the Senate and the people. As Lieutenant Governor, I would like to champion transparency as a guiding principle for all senatorial procedures. To accomplish this, I will require all senators to schedule either monthly calls or emails to all of the chapter presidents residing within their respective region to update them on what the Senate is currently working on and grant them access to legislation in process. As Lieutenant Governor, I would like to nurture a constant and open dialogue with all chapter presidents of small and large chapters in order to ensure that the needs, concerns, and proposals of all members of the Southern California Junior State are being addressed and accounted for by the Senate. That means that in addition to monthly emails, I will call chapter presidents and speak to them personally. Each month I will focus on contacting a different region, therefore calling each region every 3 months. It is important that that inner workings of the Senate are public knowledge and are being discussed.
Quality over Quantity:
As your Lieutenant Governor, I would work to make sure that all legislation produced is of the highest quality. The Senate has the potential to be a platform for change and innovation within SoCal JSA, and as your next Lt. Governor, I will ensure that the Senate is fulfilling its utmost potential by keeping our senators accountable. Meaning I will never settle for less in regards to the quality of legislation being proposed by regional senators. While it is important to work as efficiently and diligently as possibly, my main focus will be to ensure the substance of our bills exceed expectations and provides tangible and positive change for our state. Serving as a regional senator this past year has provided me with the knowledge and experience crucial to successfully fulfilling the responsibilities of Lieutenant Governor. This past year, the Senate heavily implemented the method of tag-team legislation where a pair of Senators would work on a piece of legislation together. I found this to be an extremely efficient way to run the Senate as this collaboration between two Senators produced the most comprehensive legislation our state has seen for awhile. I plan to continue this way of writing legislation in my tenure. I will also personally see to mentoring each Senator and advising them along the bill-writing process. Being that I have a year of bill writing under my belt, I have the skill that it takes to mentor my senators and fine tune their bills so to ensure that the people of SoCal JSA receive the impressive legislation they deserve.
Strong Lead of The Senate:
Being that I was a Senator this past year, I know exactly what it is like to be nervous and unsure of myself at the beginning of my senatorial term. I was fortunate to have a LTG who was as incredibly welcoming and supportive as Morgan Pak has been to the 2016-2017 Senate, and it's that example that I aspire to emulate as your next Lieutenant Governor. I will work personally with each senator to make them feel secure and prepared for the responsibilities their positions entail. I promise that I will hold each of them accountable for completing their assignments and for being positive leaders within the SoCal state. As your next LTG, I will implement mandatory monthly calls among the Senate to keep everyone on task and fully informed on the latest assignments. I would also like to provide monthly updates on the Southern California JSA Facebook page about recent senate activity to preserve the Senate's presence in and out of the convention environment.
Connecting:
The beauty of the Junior State lies in the people within it. One of the main reasons I go to every convention, every one day, and every other JSA gathering is because I have made some incredible friends through this organization. The SoCal JSA community has been my family since my very first convention, and it is my personal dream to meet as many more SoCal JSAers as I can. More than propose new legislation or train new Senators, I aspire to be the sort of Lieutenant Governor that no one feels too intimidated to approach or chat with. I believe that I am the candidate for you, not because of my resume or summer program attendance, but because I am the candidate that will never cease to value your input, your feedback, and your friendship. As your Lieutenant Governor, I will be aspire to be your friend above all else.
Promoting The Senate:
The Senate is the very foundation of what the Junior State is run upon. We write the legislation that is incorporated into the SoCal JSA constitution, and the constitution makes up the fundamentals of the organization. It has come to my attention that far too many people are unaware of how The Senate operates and why it is so vital. As Lieutenant Governor, I will work to educate the people of JSA about the Senate and its importance. We are at the very core of the Junior State and we cannot improve if we do not first educate.
